Tropical peatlands are common in Southeast Asia (about 70%), especially in Indonesia. They are significant carbon sinks and store large amounts of carbon and their damage can significantly impact on the amount of atmospheric carbon dioxide. They contain 50,000-70,000 million tons of carbon (about 3% of global soil carbon), although they cover only about 0.25% of the earth's surface or about 380,000 square kilometers.
Tropical peatlands support various ecosystems and are home to many endangered species including orangutans. The original peat swamp forest contains many valuable timber trees and many other useful products for local communities, such as bark, resin, and latex. Changes in land use and fires, mainly related to the plantations development and logging (deforestation and drainage) reduce this carbon store and contribute to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
The
problems posed by the
development of tropical
peatlands mainly stem
from a lack of
understanding of the
ecosystem complexity and
the fragility of the
relationship between
peat and forest.
Tropical peatlands are
one of our important
ecosystems that can be
used to support our
lives. The conservation,
restoration and
responsible use of
biodiversity in
peatlands will
continuously support our
future lives. Indonesia
continues to develop its
country. It is
recommended that any
development framework
should provide
conditions that allow
for the conservation and
sustainable use of
biodiversity. It also
provides more balance
sharing benefits and
reduces the drivers of
biodiversity loss.
