Abstract
Kalima T, Sumarhani. 2015. Identification and development of rattan species in communal forest of Katingan, Central Kalimantan. Pros Sem Nas Masy Biodiv Indon 1 (2): 194-200. Katingan is a region of which communal forest can potentially be developed to supply the demand of nontimber forest product (NTFP). Development of communal forests in Katingan is one of the government’s programs to meet the demand of raw materials for rattan industry whose production from natural forests is continuously declining. Community forestry in Katingan has been developed long time ago by the locals by growing the various type of woody plants, combined with NTFP-plants or crops. To support the sustainability of rattan production, several species of rattan, such us rattan sega (Calamus caesius Blume), rattan irit (C. trachycoleus Beccari), rattan cacing (C. javensis Blume), rattan manau (Calamus manan Miquel), and rattan tatuwu (C. scipionum Lour.) have been cultivated through silviculture system. The purpose of this study is to determine the potential and development of the five species of rattan through silviculture programs in Kantingan. The study was conducted in the village Tumbang Liting, Sub District Katingan Hilir, District Katingan, Province Central Kalimantan. The results showed that species Calamus caesius exhibits better vigor than the other species. Five species of rattan grew in the field with 80% of survival.
