Pros Sem Nas Masy Biodiv Indon 1 (2): 330-336. The advancement of science and technology has not eliminated the existence of traditional medicine. Traditional medicine has been getting both nationally and internationally more popular. The use of traditional medicine plants is preferable to the artificial ones because of its minimal or no side effect. With the increasing population, land conversion, and climate change that potentially have a negative impact on agriculture, food security is one of the main concerns in Samarinda. To improve food security and self-sufficiency, home-based medicine can be developed using available resources, for example, house yards. The aim of the study is to review the potential and constraints of backyard utilization for medicinal plant cultivation in Samarinda. Problems related to social and cultural aspects, economic situation, lack of knowledge about traditional medicine, lack of cultivation technology and market orientation must be resolved to achieve the food self-sufficiency.
