Abstract

Widyatmoko AYPBC. 2015. Genetic diversity of Shorea smithiana seedling in STREKplot, East Kalimantan based on SSR markers.Pros Sem Nas Masy Biodiv Indon 1: 393-397. Several silvicultural techniques have been developed and applied in the context of sustainable management for forest production. One of the silviculture research plots is STREK Plot. STREK Plot is located in Labanan, Berau, East Kalimantan. This plot was established on 1989 in order to evaluate the dynamic growth of forest stands after logging. The aim of this research is evaluating the effect of logging techniques to the genetic diversity of seedlings of Shorea smithiana. Leaves of S. smithiana seedlings were collected from 4 blocks (2 blocks of virgin forest, Reduced Impact Logging/RIL > 50 cm dbh, dan conventional looging> 50 cm dbh). A number of seedlings were varied between 3 and 24. Twenty-five alleles from three SSR primers those have been developed for S. curtisii were used for analyzing genetic diversity. Genetic diversity of each block was calculated using POPGENE 1.32 program. Genetic diversity of the four blocks was varied between 0.4762 and 0.5481. Virgin forest block has the highest genetic diversity (0.5481), however, the lowest genetic diversity belonged to RIL > 50 cm dbh (0.4762). In general, genetic diversity of seedlings was decreased ± 10% after logging compared with virgin forest. The results of this research can give the Ministry of Forestry and other stakeholders input of several options of silvicultural techniques in order to minimize reducing the genetic diversity of remaining trees and its seedlings.
