Abstract

Siregar H-M, Ardi WH. 2015. Sertification of plant variety protection Begonia “Lovely Jo†interspecific hybridization B. puspitae Ardi x B. pasamanensis M. Hughes. Pros Sem Nas Masy Biodiv Indon 1: 484-489. An artificial interspecific hybridization has been done in Bogor Botanic Gardens between Begonia puspitae Ardi as a female plant which has ovate leaf with cordate base and an adaptable B. pasamanensis M. Hughes as a male plant. This study aims to broaden the genetic diversity of existing Begonia collections. The sowing seeds resulted 40 plant seedlings were then selected into 10 individuals. The next selection resulted in one selected individual which has different characters with the parents. Selected plant was propagated vegetatively by leaf cuttings up to three times, and resulted clones which have same characters with the selected one, and named as Begonia ‘“Lovely Joâ€â€™. All the stages of hybridization have been completed and the hybrid meets the BUSS criteria, next stage is the registration and the DUS test (Distinct, Uniform, and Stabile) used the “Guidelines for the Conduct of Test for Distinctness, Uniformity and Stabilityâ€, which continued with the committee examination and certification. The final output is the certificate of plant variety protection from the Ministry of Agriculture, number 00237/PPVT/S/2013. Begonia ‘“Lovely Joâ€â€™ as the assets of LIPI, that have economical value as an ornamental plant, expected can be cultivated and propagated by its breeder, ornamental plant community or public.
