Abstract

Hastilestari BR, Pantouw CF. 2015. Effect of heat stress on the strawberry leaves (Fragaria L. Elsanta). Pros Sem Nas Masy Biodiv Indon 1: 860-863. The development of strawberry plants in cold temperature regions often faces constraints due to biotic and abiotic stresses. One of abiotic stress experienced strawberry is heat stress. The stress will induce the leaves withering and reduce yields due to photosynthesis inefficiencies. This inefficiency is caused by the destruction of plasma membrane of intracellular ion barrier. This study was to analyze the influence of heat stress on strawberry leaves. Young and old strawberries leaves were given a heat treatment 23, 35, 40, 45, 50 and 55°C. Photosynthesis parameter values based on the value of Fv/Fm after heat stress treatment showed that the young leaves had significantly higher values than the older leaves. After heat treatment, the quantum efficiency decreased significantly in young at 40, 45, 50 and 55°C. Cell damage due to heat stress resulted in damage to the cell membrane inducing ion leakage. The total number of ion leakage indicated the damage of the cell membrane. The young and old leaves showed significant differences of ion leakage at a temperature of 55°C. The number of ions leakage of young leaves increased 30.8% and 37% in old leaves. This indicated that heat stress causing greater damage to cells in old leaves than young leaves.
