Abstract

Hastilestari BR. 2015. Plasticity of photosynthetic system on CAM plants. Pros Sem Nas Masy Biodiv Indon 1: 864-867. Climate change has brought many problems, such as drought and high rainfall. The plant must adapt to these changes in order to survive. An adaptation to this changing climate is changing of its photosynthesis pathway induced by abiotic stress. Some genotypes can change the photosynthetic system of C3 to CAM whenever there is stress exposure, for example, Peperomia, Clusia, Tillandsia usneoides, Mesembryanthemum crystallinum and Euphorbia tirucalli. Malate concentration measurements indicate CAM photosyntetic pathway as malic acid is the result of CO2 collection at night. This study examined the possibility of changes in the C3 photosynthetic system to CAM due to stress using plant model E. tirucalli. The results showed that the photosynthesis system might change due to environmental factors, but E. tirucalli had two photosynthetic systems that were not affected by temperature stress.
