Abstract. Andriyani RT, Hastaniah, Matius P, Diana R, Sutedjo. 2023. Identification and analysis of understory species diversity in Sangkima Jungle Park secondary forest in Kutai National Park pre-fire affected areas, East Kalimantan. Pros Sem Nas Masy Biodiv Indon 9: 59-66. Undergrowth is vegetation at the base of a forest stand or the base of a tree community. Even though undergrowth lives in the forest bottom community, which has an important role in reducing forest disturbance, it is also used as a forest conditions indicator. This study aims to identify and identify plant species at the seedling and sapling levels in Sangkima, Kutai National Park, East Kalimantan. The Important Value Index (INP) and diversity index obtained from vegetation analysis are used as indicators to describe the diversity of plant species. The analysis was conducted by sampling plots using transect lines and purposive sampling methods. Sample plots on the transect lines have some transects of 3 and 30 sample plots, and the observed values of species diversity, evenness, and other related information. The study found 61 plant species at the seedling level, with 77 plants, and 50 species of saplings, with 66 plants. Evenness values at the seedling level were in the even category, and evenness values at the sapling level were in the almost even category, while the species diversity values at the seedling and sapling levels in the three study locations were in the medium category with diversity values ranging from 2-3. In burnt areas, the succession process is very slow because burnt land has experienced severe land degradation with erosion/subsidence on the soil surface. Hence the forest floor is also inundated because there are no canopy and shade, so shrubs dominate.
