Abstract

Frianto D, Novriyanti E. 2017. Exploration of Taxus sumatrana potential in Mount Kerinci, Sumatra. Pros Sem Nas Masy Biodiv Indon 3: 471-475. Taxus sumatrana is a plant species grown on a plateau, belonging to the family of Taxaceae and the subdivision of Gymnospermae, and has a potential in the pharmaceutical field (source of paclitaxel [taxol]). This study aimed to determine the potential of individual density T. sumatrana in Mount Kerinci, Kerinci District, Jambi Province. The methods used in this study were the methods of path and terraced lines, starting from an altitude of 1800 m asl until 2500 m asl. The data obtained were then analyzed to determine the density level of T. sumatrana plant and the distribution pattern, both at the level of trees, poles, sapling, and seedling. The data of T. sumatrana distribution pattern at trees, poles, sapling, and seedling levels were analyzed using Morisita index formula, while to determine the distribution pattern of in groups or not, it was conducted with a Chi-square distribution. Other variables observed included soil temperature, soil pH and light intensity. The result showed that the distribution pattern of T. sumatrana at a tree level in Mount Kerinci based on Morisita index was occurred in group (2.19) with the plant density of 19.1 plants/ha. In this exploration activity, Taxus was often found in riverbanks. The environmental factors observed included soil temperature ranging from 16.4-21°C, soil pH between 5.9-6.4, and the light intensity between 37.7-151.6 lux.
