Potential assay of cocoyam (Xanthosoma sagittifolium) tuber as functional againt antihyperglycemic and anti antihipercholesterolemia. Bioteknologi 13 (2): 52-58. This study aims to determine the effect of cocoyam tuber on blood glucose and cholesterol levels of adult male mice (Mus musculus L.) as model animals. The study was divided into 2 stages: antihyperglycemic and antihipercholesterolemia assays. Hyperglycemic mice which was induced alloxan dose 20 mg / 200 g body weight for 3 were clustered into 3 groups, i.e: placebo, positive control (given glibenclamide), and given the cocoyam tuber. Each group was treated for 6 days. Measurement of blood glucose was performed 4 times, day 0, 3rd, 6th, and 9th. For antihipercholesterolemia test, the remaining mice were induced high fat diet for 14 days due to hypercholesterolemia condition. They were grouped into 3 groups then: placebo, positive control (given simvastatin), and given cocoyam tuber. Measurements of blood total cholesterol, HDL, and LDL levels were performed 3 times, day 0, 14th, and 28th.The results showed that blood glucose levels of mice consumed cocoyam tuber decreased significantly (p<0.05) on day 6th and day 9th. It showed that blood glucose returned to the normal levels after consumed cocoyam tuber. Blood total cholesterol, HDL, and LDL levels tended to decrease on the day 28th. Nevertheless the decrease was unsignificantly (p>0.05). Therefore, the cocoyam tuber is potentially used for antihyperglycemic functional food source but not for antihipercholesterolemia
